Ann Newland was a painter and teacher born in Wiltshire, and while living in London showed at RA, RSA and elsewhere. She studied at Byam Shaw School 1936-8 under Ernest Jackson, and in 1938 was awarded a scholarship at The British School at Rome. This work probably dates to this period. A very similar work to this one is in the RAF Museums Collection, from World War II when she worked for the Ministry of Home Security Camouflage Establishment in the Midlands. She then taught art in Scotland. She was influenced especially by the work of Andrea Mantegna.
