A first class painting of probably a Hudson River landscape with figures in the foreground and boats including a paddle steamer in the distance. He used scratching out technique for the hazy sun

William C. Craig was born in Dublin, Ireland. He achieved recognition as a watercolourist in his native country before moving to New York in 1863. In 1866 he was one of the founding members of the American Society of Painters in Water Colours along with William Hart and Samuel Colman. He painted mostly in the northeast, particularly in upstate New York, in the style of the Hudson River School painters and exhibited at the National Academy of Design form 1864 to 1870. He also took a trip to Kentucky and Ohio in 1865

In his mid forties, Craig died tragically by drowning whilst swimming Lake George, New York. His works are in the collection of the New York Historical Society.

The painting is in very good condition with no foxing or other condition issues. As it will be shipped from the UK it won’t be shipped in its antique frame unless requested and we can’t send it glazed due to damage risk. Mounted in a new pale ivory colour mount, in a sealed mount sandwich ready for framing
